Terroir, “the sense of place” is expressed merely in noble wines. The color, aroma and flavor of wine are all influenced by the vineyard’s soil and climate. The great quality and diversity of our three vineyards ensures a rich palette of flavors and complexities that are expressed in our wines.
Ronnie James, the founder of Tzora Vineyards, had spent years to allocate the finest terroirs in the Judean Hills, west of Jerusalem. Today, Tzora Vineyards owns several vineyards; Shoresh and Neve Ilan, each with varying soils and meso-climates.
The Judean Hills rise sharply from the coastal plain, and exhibit ideal growing conditions for growing wine grapes. Man made terraces cling to this rugged area in a multitude of directions as they follow the contours of the steep slopes. Cold winters, sharp temperature drop during the short summer nights and early morning summer mists, as well as variations in soils from rocky limestone outcrops to ones rich in minerals, all contribute to the character, the balance and the great longevity of the wines.
The team work very hard in the vineyard and do minimal intervention in the winery, finding the correct balance for each plot in the vineyard. They grow 80 acres in three vineyards of different Terroirs.
In order to achieve this balance they also use two main tools: Differentiation and Selection - to merely select the best fruits: by shoot thinning, green harvest, and thorough clusters and berry sorting.
Who is the wonderful team at Tzora Vineyards?
Eran Pick, the dedicated winemaker:
Eran Pick completed his B.S degree in Viticulture and Enology with Highest Honors at the University of California, Davis. He holds the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) diploma, which provides professional knowledge of wine evaluation. Pick joined Tzora Vineyards' team in 2006, following a few training periods at wineries in Napa, Sonoma, Barossa and Bordeaux.
Jean-Cloude Berrouet, wine consultant:
Jean-Claude Berrouet is a French winemaker. World-renowned in his field, he is best known for his work with Jean Pierre Moueix at the famous Chateau Petrus and Dominus Estate, also owned by the Moueix family. He is considered to be "arguably one of the world's most revered and most expensive wines." He is known for making wines of great subtlety and nuance.
Ronnie James (1945-2008), vinter, founder and winemaker.
Ronnie James attachment to the land was established early in life at various agricultural schools. His affinity to vines began some 30 years ago when he was asked to take over responsibility for Tzora's long established vineyard. His love affair with wine began when he first tasted a wine made by a winery which purchased Tzora's crop. Immediately, he decided to begin making his own wines.
James viewed the wine through the vines and weaved the various components together with an artist's touch. He studied the behavior of the vines, analyzed weather conditions, took calculated risks – and ultimately followed his own instincts.
As the Israeli pioneer of terroir, James was awarded the "Eshkol Hazahav" (Golden Bunch) award for his remarkable contribution to Israel's wine culture. Sadly, he passed away in April 2008.
