Domaine du Castel

It all started when - prompted by intuition – Eli Ben Zaken planted a small vineyard on a hilltop beside his home in the Judean Hills in the vicinity of Jerusalem. The year was 1988 and four years later, they started with crushing their first Cabernet and Merlot in an empty stable next to the chicken shed. the wine was aged for 24 months in two Seguin Moreau new French oak barrels and by the spring of 1995 it was bottled. Everything had been done to the very highest standards and even the corks were the best that money could buy.

A name was chosen – CASTEL – after a nearby Crusader fortress. A beautiful etching of the vineyard and the house by a friend the Jerusalem artist Arie Azene was used for the label and, with typical Israeli chutzpa, it was called a "Grand Vin" – just to let everyone know that a lot of effort had been put into making this wine. At this point in time, no one had yet thought of making a second wine. the appellation was coined by translating "Judean Hills" into "Haute-Judée.

This is a winery that does not like to be described as a boutique winery but as a small winery managed by a family who believes that their success is mainly the result of a personal involvement in all aspects of the business – from viticulture to winemaking and from management to distribution. With this vision they have managed to create a very close-knit team. As they consistently produce top quality award-winning wines, they have been named one of the top 3 wineries in Israel. The fans eagerly await each year with excitement the new vintage produces for this year.

Eli ben Zaken – Winemaker:

After being born in cosmopolitan Alexandria and educated in England, Italy and Switzerland, Eli moved to Israel, first working in agriculture and then later in the restaurant business. Eli has no formal winemaking education, and so when he had to decide whether or not to turn Domaine du Castel from a hobby into a formal business he was faced with a formidable challenge. Eli recalls how a sentiment voiced by Winston Churchill was very apt at this time as he felt as though he “were walking with Destiny, and that all my past life had been but a preparation for this hour and for this trial … I was sure I should not fail” (Winston Churchill, May 1940).

C Blanc du Castel

C Blanc du Castel is made of 100% Chardonnay from a very special vineyard on a hilltop three kilometers from the winery. The must is fermented in French oak barrels and aged sur lie with frequent batonnage for nearly 12 months. The aroma is fruity with a hint of flint and roasted almonds. The palate is complex and round with plenty of yellow tropical fruit and citrus. It is very well balanced and mouth coating.

Petit Castel
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot
Petit Castel is also a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Perceived as the Grand Vin’s younger brother, it is really the product of a different winemaking philosophy. More fruit and more tamed and elegant tannins, it is a hearty wine. Aged 16 months in French oak barrels, it has a full body and deep purple color, followed by rich black fruit, cherry and plum and a long finish.
